Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections: Five Crucial Seats To Watch In The Race For Power
With 230 seats up for grabs, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces a formidable challenge from the Indian National Congress (INC). Five key seats, in particular, are expected to play an important role in shaping the state's political landscape.
Budhni: Shivraj Singh Chouhan's Stronghold

Main Candidates: Shivraj Singh Chouhan (BJP) vs Vikram Mastal (INC)
Past Winners: 2018, 2013 - Shivraj Singh Chouhan (BJP)
Budhni has been Shivraj Singh Chouhan's undisputed domain since 2006, serving as his pocket borough. His electoral dominance is evident in his victory margins, having defeated Congress leader Arun Yadav by a whopping 58,999 votes in the last polls.
Despite Chouhan's unchallenged status as the BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate, his political clout in Budhni remains undeniable. The constituency has witnessed a consistent pattern of high voter turnout, with the exception of 2013, indicating the active participation of its citizens.
Chhindwara: Kamal Nath's Bastion
Main Candidates: Kamal Nath (INC) vs. Vivek Bunty Sahu (BJP)
Past Winners: 2018 - Deepak Saxena (INC); 2013 - Chandrabhan K Singh (BJP)
Kamal Nath's grip on Chhindwara is undeniable, having secured victory in a by-poll in May 2019 with a margin of over 25,800 votes. His decades-long political career is further cemented by his record nine wins from the Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat. Nath is leveraging his influence to counter the BJP and make a strong bid for the CM's chair.
The victory margin in Chhindwara has fluctuated over the past three elections, with the INC emerging victorious in 2018 with a margin of 14,547 votes. The winning candidate's vote share stood at 50.47 per cent, highlighting the tight nature of the contest. Voter turnout has consistently been high, with a slight increase in 2018 compared to the previous two elections.
Narsingpur: The BJP's OBC Champion
Main Candidates: Prahlad Singh Patel (BJP) vs. Lakhan Singh Patel (INC)
Past Winners: 2018, 2013 - Jalam Singh Patel (BJP)
The BJP has strategically fielded strong OBC leader and Union minister Prahlad Singh Patel from Narsingpur, replacing his brother Jalam Singh Patel. The Patel brothers have successfully maintained the BJP's stronghold in the region, with Jalam Singh winning the 2013 and 2018 polls. Prahlad Singh's candidacy is expected to further strengthen the BJP's position in Narsingpur.
Narsingpur has experienced variations in the victory margin over the past three elections, with the widest margin recorded in 2013, where the BJP's candidate, Jalam Singh Patel, won with 48,481 votes.
However, Jalam Singh Patel "munna Bhaiya" secured a narrow victory in 2018 with a margin of just 14,903 votes. The winning candidate's vote share exceeded 57 per cent, indicating a clear preference for the winning party.
Voter turnout has remained consistently high, with a slight increase in 2018 compared to 2013. The high turnout signifies the active engagement of voters in this constituency.
Indore-1: A Clash of Titans
Main Candidates: Kailash Vijayvargiya (BJP) vs. Sanjay Shukla (INC)
Past Winners: 2018 - Sanjay Shukla (INC); 2013 - Sudarshan Gupta (BJP)
The BJP has deployed senior leader and national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya to contest from Indore-1, a constituency currently represented by Congress' Sanjay Shukla. The BJP, having won the seat in 2008 and 2013, aims to reclaim its dominance in the region by fielding a strong leader.
Indore-1 has witnessed a fluctuating victory margin over the past three elections. The smallest margin was recorded in 2018, when the INC's Sanjay Shukla won with a margin of 8,163 votes. This close contest was reflected in the vote share of the winning candidate, which stood at 50.24%. Voter turnout has remained consistently high, with a slight dip in 2013 and 2008 compared to 2018. The high turnout in 2018 highlights the significance of this seat in the state's electoral landscape.
Lahar: Dr. Govind Singh's Unbroken Streak
Main Candidates: Dr. Govind Singh (INC) vs. Ambrish Sharma (BJP)
Dr. Govind Singh has been an indomitable force in Lahar, holding the assembly seat undefeated since 1990. His unwavering loyalty to Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh and consistent victories, including a substantial margin of over 9,000 votes in 2018, make him a formidable contender in this election.
In Lahar, the victory margin has gradually increased over the past three elections, with the largest margin recorded in 2018. The INC emerged victorious in 2018 with a margin of 9,073 votes.
Despite the competitive nature of the race, the winning candidate's vote share stood at 40.11%, indicating a degree of voter preference. Voter turnout has remained high, with a slight decrease in 2018 compared to the previous assembly election.
