Machil snow tragedy: 5 soldiers succumb to injuries

The soldiers were rescued after being trapped under the snow after an avalanche hit the army post on January 28. They were undergoing treatment at the army hospital in Srinagar.

The Indian army on Monday declared that five soldiers who were rescued in Machil of Kashmir succumbed to their injuries. In a press statement, the Indian Army said that the five soldiers who had been trapped under snow after the caving in of track in Machil sector on January 28 had attained martyrdom.

"Despite persistent poor weather conditions they were being evacuated to the army hospital in Srinagar. Unfortunately, all the bravehearts have succumbed to their injuries," the statement said. All the five soldiers were being treated for hypothermia.

The incident comes days after two avalanches hit a military post and a patrol along the LoC, killing 15. The army in its statement also said that the mortal remains of 14 martyrs in Gurez, which could not be evacuated earlier because of inclement weather, were also brought to Srinagar on Monday in Air Force helicopters. The mortal remains of the soldiers will be sent to their native places, the statement said.
