Born in Kudallur village in Palakkad district in 1933, M T was the youngest of four children. His father worked in Ceylon while he spent his early years in Kudallur and Punnayurkulam village. The Chief Minister noted that M T's writings reflected Kerala's life and ethos, impacting both individual minds and collective consciousness.

M T began his professional journey as a teacher and gramasevakan before joining Mathrubhumi Weekly as a sub-editor in 1957. He later became its editor for several years. His work championed modernism through characters that embodied modernist sensibilities while promoting other modernist writers' works as an editor.
