Lunar Eclipse 2023: Will India Witness Full Hunter's Moon? Timings, Myths And More

October 2023 presents a unique celestial spectacle as it hosts the second eclipse of the month, a Lunar Eclipse, or Chandra Grahan, set to grace our skies on October 28. Notably, this Lunar Eclipse follows closely on the heels of the Solar Eclipse that occurred just 14 days prior, on October 14.

According to NASA, Lunar Eclipses coincide with the full moon phase, occurring when Earth aligns perfectly between the Moon and Sun. Earth's shadow, cast upon the Moon, causes it to darken and, on certain occasions, adopt a striking reddish hue over the course of several hours. These captivating celestial events are visible from approximately half of Earth.

Where and When to Witness the Lunar Eclipse in India

The Partial Lunar Eclipse is anticipated to be visible from all parts of India during the midnight hours. This phenomenon transpires when Earth positions itself between the full moon and the sun. The celestial spectacle is scheduled to commence on the evening of October 28, persisting into the early hours of October 29. The eclipse's onset in India is projected to be around 11:31 PM. The Ministry of Science has officially announced that a partial lunar eclipse will grace the skies on October 28-29, 2023 (6-7 Kartika, 1945 Saka Era). While the moon enters the penumbral phase at midnight on October 28, the umbral phase is anticipated to commence in the early hours of October 29. The total duration of the eclipse is expected to span 1 hour and 19 minutes, with the umbral phase initiating at 01:05 AM IST on October 29 and concluding at 02:24 AM IST.

Full Hunter's Moon and Its Significance

In addition to India, this partial lunar eclipse will be visible in several regions worldwide, including the Western Pacific Ocean, Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa, eastern South America, north-eastern North America, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the South Pacific Ocean. The occurrence of the Full Hunter's Moon, which follows the Harvest Moon, is a compelling facet of this lunar eclipse. "Hunter's Moon" traditionally signaled the time for hunters to prepare for the impending colder months, as it provided ample moonlight for hunting.

According to Space.com, at 2:01 PM EDT (1801 GMT) on October 28, the Full Hunter's Moon will experience a partial lunar eclipse, entering Earth's umbra, or darker shadow, at approximately 3:35 PM EDT (1935 GMT). The eclipse is set to reach its peak at approximately 4:14 PM EDT, concluding around 6:26 PM EDT (2226 GMT).

Myths and Beliefs Surrounding Lunar Eclipses

Lunar eclipses often spark a range of popular myths and beliefs. Some individuals refrain from eating and sleeping during an eclipse, while others advocate taking a bath afterward to purify the body and spirit. Pregnant women are traditionally advised to stay indoors during a lunar eclipse, as it is believed that the phenomenon may have adverse effects. Common superstitions suggest that looking at the eclipse with the naked eye can result in blindness, while even minor wounds may heal slowly and leave lasting scars.

Dos and Don'ts During a Lunar Eclipse

Observing certain customs during a lunar eclipse is a longstanding tradition:

Dos:

  • Incorporate tulsi leaves into food items during the eclipse.
  • Take a ceremonial bath before and after the eclipse to cleanse body and soul.

Don'ts:

  • Traditionally, it is advisable to stay indoors and avoid initiating new projects or activities during a lunar eclipse.
  • Pregnant women are typically encouraged to remain indoors, avoiding cutting or sewing fabrics, handling sharp tools like scissors or blades, or using knives to prevent harm to the unborn child.
  • It is also common to refrain from consuming food and from directly viewing the eclipse with the naked eye.
