Lok Sabha Elections: Rs 8,889 Crore Worth of Voter Inducements Seized
In a significant crackdown on attempts to influence voters in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, authorities have confiscated a massive haul of cash, drugs, and other inducements valued at Rs 8,889 crore, as reported by the Election Commission on Saturday. The seized items include narcotics, which represent the largest portion at 45%, amounting to approximately Rs 3,959 crore. This operation underscores the diverse methods employed to sway electoral outcomes, ranging from direct inducements to manipulating the economic environment by restricting the circulation of money.

The Election Commission has particularly highlighted the importance of intercepting narcotics and psychotropic substances, noting a concerning trend where regions previously considered mere transit zones for drugs are now turning into major consumption markets. This shift has prompted rigorous enforcement actions, with notable operations being carried out by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad, Narcotics Control Bureau, and the Indian Coast Guard. These agencies have executed three significant drug seizures within a span of just three days, collectively valued at Rs 892 crore.
Further breakdown of the seizures reveals Rs 849.15 crore in cash, Rs 814.85 crore in liquor, drugs worth Rs 3,958.85 crore, and precious metals amounting to Rs 1,260.33 crore. The data indicates that besides Gujarat, Maharashtra and Delhi have also witnessed substantial drug seizures. A notable operation was conducted by Noida police on April 17, where a drug manufacturing unit in Greater Noida was dismantled. The raid resulted in the seizure of 26.7 kg of MDMA drug valued at Rs 150 crore and led to the arrest of two foreign nationals.
The Election Commission has expressed that the volume of seizures has already surpassed those recorded during the entire duration of the 2019 parliamentary elections by a significant margin. This uptick is attributed to the intensified campaign activities as the Lok Sabha polls progress into their final three phases. In response to these developments, the Commission has issued directives to state chief electoral officers and enforcement agencies to enhance vigilance and curb any efforts aimed at unduly influencing voters through financial or material inducements.
This concerted effort by various enforcement agencies underscores a commitment to ensuring a fair and untainted electoral process. By targeting the flow of illegal inducements, authorities aim to mitigate undue influences on voter decisions, thereby upholding the integrity of the democratic process.
