Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Congress MP Sonia Gandhi Targets PM Modi, Says Democracy Is In Threat

Former Congress Working Committee chief and Rajya Sabha Member Sonia Gandhi on Saturday came out all guns blazing and targetted Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of tarnishing India's dignity and democracy. She added that the BJP is trying to poach Opposition leaders to achieve its target of 400 plus seats.

Sonia Gandhi added that the BJP government is conspiring to change the Constitution, which is not healthy for democracy, and the people of this country will give them a befitting reply.

While addressing a public meeting in Jaipur, Sonia Gandhi said, "Modi ji khud ko mahaan maan kar, desh aur loktantra ki maryada ka cheer haran kar rahe hain' (Considering himself great, Modi ji is tearing apart the dignity of the country and its democracy)...Opposition leaders are threatened to join the BJP. Today, the democracy of our country is in danger...Conspiracies are being done to change our Constitution...It is all a dictatorship and we all will give a befitting reply to it."

Other Congress leaders also joined the chorus to attack the BJP. While addressing the rally, Sachin Pilot, one of the prominent faces for the grand old party in Rajasthan, called the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections as "decisive" and a fight of two ideologies. He added that the Modi government has weakened independent institutions, which is a big threat to Indian democracy.

"This election is between two ideologies. The central government has weakened our constitutional institutions through policy... In Chhattisgarh, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi announced this for the first time, if the Congress and INDIA alliance government is formed, they will give a legal guarantee of MSP to the farmers... This election is a decisive election for the nation," Sachin Pilot said.

Notably, there are 25 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan and in 2019, the BJP-led NDA registered a landslide victory in the state. BJP won 24 out of 25 seats, while its alliance partner Hanuman Beniwal's Rashtriya Lokshakti Party (RLP) won 1 seat.
