Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Arithmetic Behind The Surge In INDIA Bloc Alliance

The results of the Lok Sabha Elections on Tuesday indicate that the INDIA Bloc could potentially halt the momentum of the Narendra Modi-led juggernaut in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The realisation of this potential hinges on the cohesion of the grand alliance and the level of anti-incumbency against the Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

According to an analysis by OneIndia, if the current scenario persists, there's a chance that the INDIA Bloc could attract former allies like Nitish Kumar and Eknath Shinde, given the expected narrow margin between the two alliances, likely around 50 seats.

However, in a scenario with strong anti-incumbency, the INDIA alliance seems to have effectively capitalised on the accumulated grievances against the 10-year Modi government. The Congress, as the principal national Opposition party, appears to have reaped the most benefits so far, although it's premature to draw a final conclusion pending further rounds of counting. It must be noted that in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress has come a long way to 99 seats (as of now) in 2024.

The decision of numerous major political parties to unite alongside smaller ones to form the Opposition alliance, the INDIA Bloc, has evidently facilitated the consolidation of anti-BJP/NDA votes. Their objective now is to sustain and bolster this momentum to challenge the BJP's majority and keep the electoral landscape competitive, contingent upon the performance of the BJP and its allies, currently falling short of exit poll projections.

Factors in Favor of the INDIA Bloc

Factors favoring the INDIA Bloc include the success of their campaign portraying the BJP's "400 plus seats" ambition as a threat to reservation quotas for OBCs, SCs, and STs. The current trend, particularly the improved performance of the SP and Congress in Uttar Pradesh, is indicative of this sentiment. Also, the Congress is making gains in key states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, while maintaining its stronghold in the South. Moreover, the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC continues to lead in West Bengal, further bolstering the INDIA Bloc's prospects. However, a clearer picture will emerge only as the counting process progresses.
