Lok Sabha 2024: Congress Calls PM Modi Desperate, Passing Fear Mongering Statements After Phase II Washout

The Congress has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of resorting to "fear mongering" and termed him "desperate" following what they labeled as a "washout" in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Jairam Ramesh, a general secretary of the Congress, directed pointed questions at the prime minister ahead of his rallies in Karnataka.

In lieu of what they perceive as misinformation and alarmist tactics, Ramesh presented a series of inquiries:

Senior Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh
  • Why have BJP MPs performed inadequately as representatives of the people?
  • Despite a seven-month delay, why has the Centre released less than 20% of the drought relief funds?
  • Why is the Centre obstructing projects like Upper Bhadra and Mahadayi?

Ramesh elaborated on what he deemed as deceptive rhetoric and demanded answers regarding the whereabouts of BJP MPs while Karnataka faced what he characterized as punitive actions from the Modi government.

Citing data from the Parliamentary Research Service (PRS), Ramesh asserted that BJP MPs from Karnataka have demonstrated a lack of diligence towards their duties, with attendance rates in Parliament falling below the national average. Furthermore, he claimed that a substantial number of MPs neglected to raise pertinent issues concerning Karnataka, such as MGNREGA funds, drought relief, and additional rice allocations for PDS.

Ramesh alleged that some MPs were directly or indirectly complicit in fomenting communal violence in their constituencies, and questioned whether the prime minister would take responsibility for their selection.

He also highlighted the prolonged delay in releasing disaster relief funds to Karnataka, despite the state's repeated requests, and criticized the government's allocation, which amounted to less than 20% of the requested amount.

Regarding essential infrastructure projects like the Upper Bhadra and Mahadayi, Ramesh accused the Modi government of neglect, questioning why promised funds were not disbursed and project clearances were deferred.

In conclusion, Ramesh urged the prime minister to address these concerns and break his "silence" on issues crucial to the welfare of Karnataka's people.
