Leopard Captured in Meerut Home Following Intense Eight-Hour Operation

In a remarkable display of coordination and skill, a forest department team successfully tranquilised and captured a leopard in a residential area, following an intensive eight-hour operation. The incident occurred on Saturday in the Kaserukheda locality of the city's Cantonment area, drawing significant attention from local residents and authorities alike.

Leopard Captured After 8-Hr Operation

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rajesh Kumar detailed the sequence of events, starting with the department receiving information about the leopard's intrusion into a civilian's house around 10 am. Swift action was taken by both police and forest department teams who arrived at the scene, located in a densely-populated area, to manage the situation.

The operation culminated around 6:30 pm when the leopard was successfully tranquilised and secured by the team. The male leopard, estimated to be around four years old, had entered the house of a local resident named Sameer. At the time, Sameer's two children, Manku (8) and Veera (10), along with their grandmother, were present in the house. They took immediate action by locking themselves in a room upon sighting the leopard, which settled just outside their door.

DFO Kumar elaborated on the rescue efforts, stating that the house was encased with nets on all sides for safety, and a wall was dismantled to facilitate the safe evacuation of the family. Following their evacuation, the team proceeded to tranquilise the leopard. In response to inquiries about a reported attack by the leopard, Kumar mentioned that there was an incident involving one person injured in the morning, which is currently under investigation.

Concluding the operation's details, DFO Kumar assured that the leopard is in good health and will be released back into its natural habitat in the Shivalik range. This incident highlights the challenges and risks associated with wildlife entering urban areas and underscores the importance of prompt and effective response mechanisms to ensure both human and animal safety.
