Left Parties Demand Police Commissioner's Resignation in Kolkata Protest
Leaders and supporters of the CPIM-led Left Front gathered near Kolkata Police headquarters on Friday evening. They demanded the resignation of Commissioner Vineet Goyal, citing alleged mishandling of the rape and murder case of a woman doctor at RG Kar hospital on August 9. The protest, named 'Lalbazar Abhijan,' was halted around 3 pm near the police headquarters by an eight-feet tall steel barrier set up by the police to prevent further movement.

"We will sit here throughout the night and hold protests in a peaceful manner. We hope there will not be any provocation from the police," said CPIM state secretary Mohammed Salim. He criticised the Kolkata police commissioner for mishandling the investigation from day one, suggesting reasons known only to him and the state government. Salim insisted that Goyal should step down or face continued protests.
Protesters Demand CBI Interrogation
Veteran CPIM leader Biman Bose, along with leaders from CPI, Forward Bloc, and student and youth bodies, addressed hundreds of protesters who had gathered. The Left activists carried posters and placards, shouting slogans against the TMC government. They demanded that Goyal be interrogated by the CBI, which is currently investigating the RG Kar case.
A significant number of police personnel were deployed in the area to manage the situation. The protesters were determined to continue their demonstration peacefully throughout the night, hoping for no provocation from the police.
The protest was marked by a strong presence of Left party supporters who expressed their dissatisfaction with how the case was being handled. They believe that only a CBI interrogation of Goyal would ensure justice in this matter.
The demonstration highlighted growing tensions between the Left Front and the TMC government over law enforcement issues in Kolkata. The protesters' call for Goyal's resignation underscores their lack of confidence in local authorities' ability to handle sensitive cases effectively.
The situation remains tense as both sides stand firm in their positions. The Left Front's insistence on a peaceful protest contrasts with their strong demands for accountability and transparency from law enforcement agencies.
The protest near Kolkata Police headquarters reflects broader concerns about governance and justice in West Bengal. As events unfold, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to these demands for change.
The gathering of CPIM leaders and supporters near Lalbazar signifies a critical moment in West Bengal's political landscape. Their actions underscore ongoing frustrations with local governance and law enforcement practices.
The conclusion of this protest will likely have significant implications for future interactions between political parties and law enforcement in Kolkata. The demand for Commissioner Goyal's resignation continues to be a focal point for those seeking justice for the RG Kar hospital incident.
