'Leaked Papers For You, Darling': Lucknow Professor Told Student; Arrested

An assistant professor in the zoology department of Lucknow University is facing police investigation after a viral audio clip allegedly captured offers of leaked exam papers and inappropriate comments to a female student, triggering anger on campus and sparking fresh debate over examination integrity and sexual harassment procedures at the university.

Police said the teacher, identified as Dr. Paramjeet Singh, was detained on Friday, days after the clips surfaced. An FIR was lodged at Hasanganj police station on May 15 following a written complaint from the university’s Controller of Examinations, who accused Dr. Singh of obscene conversations and promising unfair academic favours to the student.

DCP Central Zone Vikrant Vir stated that the student handed audio recordings to the Lucknow University administration, which then set up an internal inquiry committee and later contacted police. Investigators are now inspecting the files to verify their authenticity and to check whether any zoology final-year examination papers were actually leaked or if there was only an attempt.

Police and university officials said three different clips were submitted. In them, the assistant professor is allegedly heard discussing how to hand over question papers in advance for two ongoing exams. The material reached police on a pen drive given by the university, which had collected it from the student during the internal inquiry process.

One alleged conversation begins with the line, "Darling, I have retrieved two papers for you. When will you come meet me?" In another part of the same recording, the teacher appears to press for a meeting before exams, saying, "Don't try, come before the exams, within seven days," while promising leaked question papers and other academic benefits.

According to officials, a separate clip apparently captures Dr. Singh asking the student to meet once every week in exchange for these favours. Another recording reportedly has the teacher offering money while repeatedly urging the student to accept the proposals, even as the student is heard declining and resisting the suggestions.

The allegations and the viral spread of the audio online rapidly led to unrest on the Lucknow University campus. Members of several student organisations held protests outside the proctor’s office, raised slogans against the administration and demanded Dr. Singh’s immediate arrest along with his dismissal from service after completion of the ongoing inquiry.

Before the case reached police, the student had first taken the complaint to the university’s Internal Complaint Committee, which handles sexual harassment cases. Later, the student visited the proctor’s office with representatives of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, submitted a detailed written complaint and formally turned over the audio recordings.

The case against Dr. Singh now moves on two tracks, with the police investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Uttar Pradesh Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, running alongside the university’s internal proceedings, while authorities assess the audio evidence and examine whether any academic process was compromised.
