Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka Visits Bihar’s Mahabodhi Temple In Bodh Gaya
Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka wrapped up his visit to India with a spiritual stop at Bodh Gaya's Mahabodhi Temple. This visit highlighted the cultural connections and security commitments between the two nations. The temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is currently hosting significant prayers for global peace.
Dissanayaka's visit to India marked his first international trip since becoming President. He arrived in Bodh Gaya on Tuesday, following comprehensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. Bodh Gaya holds immense importance as a Buddhist pilgrimage destination.

Spiritual Engagements at Mahabodhi Temple
Accompanied by Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayanta, Dissanayaka was warmly welcomed by Bhikkhu Chalinda, the head monk, along with officials from the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) and the Maha Bodhi Society of India (MBCI). The President offered traditional offerings to Lord Buddha amidst sacred chants.
During his temple visit, Dissanayaka paid respects at seven sites linked to Lord Buddha within the temple grounds. These included Mucalinda Sarovar and Ratna Griha. He also meditated under the revered Bodhi Tree, reflecting on its spiritual significance.
The President participated in the ongoing Kagyu Monlam prayers for world peace under the Bodhi Tree. A senior Lama presented him with a Khaada, a sacred scarf. District officials and BTMC members gifted mementoes to commemorate his visit.
Expressions of Gratitude and Cultural Ties
In the visitor's book, Dissanayaka expressed deep gratitude for visiting Bodh Gaya. He described offering prayers in the main sanctum and under the Bodhi Tree as profoundly meaningful experiences. His visit underscored Sri Lanka's enduring spiritual ties with Bodh Gaya's Buddhist heritage.
Dissanayaka also visited MBCI's Buddhagaya Centre, paying homage to sacred relics of Buddha and disciples Sariputra and Mahamogallana enshrined there. "The visit underscores the enduring spiritual and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and the sacred Buddhist heritage of Bodh Gaya," noted BTMC member Kiran Lama.
Security Assurances Amid Regional Concerns
During talks with Prime Minister Modi, Dissanayaka assured that Sri Lanka would not allow its territory to be used against India's security interests. This assurance came amid India's concerns over China's growing military influence in Colombo.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal commented on 'X', highlighting shared values and cultural heritage as foundational elements of their partnership. The visit reinforced these bonds while addressing regional security dynamics effectively.
