Lalu Prasad Joins Opposition Leaders in Supporting Mamata Banerjee for INDIA Bloc Leadership

The INDIA bloc is strategically united to challenge the BJP, according to Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev. Her remarks came amid growing support for Mamata Banerjee to lead the coalition. Dev praised Banerjee's electoral success against the BJP, which has prompted many leaders to advocate for her leadership role. On the same day, RJD chief Lalu Prasad also endorsed Banerjee as the head of the bloc.

Support Grows for Mamata Banerjees Leadership

Banerjee's political experience is extensive, having served as a seven-term MP, four-time Union minister, and three-time chief minister. The YSR Congress Party, although not part of the INDIA bloc, expressed support for Banerjee, describing her as the most capable leader for the coalition. Days after Banerjee expressed willingness to lead if given a chance, NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar backed her, and more voices have emerged in her favour.

Support for Mamata Banerjee

Lalu Prasad stated on Tuesday that Banerjee should lead the INDIA bloc and criticised Congress by saying, "The Congress reservations amount to nothing. Mamata should be given the leadership role." Dev echoed this sentiment by highlighting Banerjee's governance record and ability to defeat the BJP electorally. She added that Banerjee's inclusive approach is widely appreciated within the bloc.

YSRCP Rajya Sabha MP Vijayasai Reddy also supported Banerjee, stating she could effectively manage INDIA bloc parties. He emphasised her capability and experience in leading a large state and handling various portfolios over time. Reddy expressed confidence that Banerjee could lead the bloc to power.

Leadership Discussions

A meeting involving Aam Aadmi Party, NCPSP, and Congress leaders took place in Delhi on Tuesday evening. Attendees included Arvind Kejriwal, Sharad Pawar, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Although leadership discussions were anticipated, leaders announced plans to approach the Supreme Court over alleged EVM manipulation in Maharashtra elections.

Kejriwal raised concerns about voter lists in Delhi ahead of upcoming assembly elections. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav dismissed reports of discord within the INDIA bloc over Banerjee's leadership bid. He stated that everyone has ambitions but decisions are made collectively.

Exploring Leadership Options

Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut suggested openness to discussing leadership beyond Congress within the INDIA bloc. Speaking in Delhi, Raut noted his party's strong ties with Congress leaders like Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. He acknowledged Congress as a national party with the most MPs among INDIA bloc allies but stressed the need for discussions on leadership roles.

Raut mentioned potential leaders such as Mamata Banerjee, Uddhav Thackeray, Lalu Prasad, Sharad Pawar, or Akhilesh Yadav. Currently, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge chairs the Opposition grouping formed before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Banerjee recently stated she could handle dual responsibilities of leading the opposition front while serving as West Bengal's chief minister. Her comments come amid tensions within the INDIA bloc due to dissatisfaction from regional parties and recent electoral setbacks for Congress in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Maharashtra.

In a Friday interview with a news channel, Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with how the opposition INDIA bloc functions. She signalled her intent to lead if given a chance and promised to ensure smooth operations within the alliance.
