District Magistrate Transfers Subdivisional Magistrate After Threatening Video Circulates On Social Media

A video showing Nighasan Subdivisional Magistrate Rajesh Kumar threatening Barati Lal, led to his transfer by the District Magistrate. An inquiry has been instituted and the probe team will submit its report in three days.

The district magistrate of Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, India has recently transferred a subdivisional magistrate from Nighasan following the circulation of a video allegedly showing him threatening a complainant. The incident, which highlights issues regarding power dynamics and accountability within local governance structures, has sparked significant discussion on social media platforms.

Transfer Order Issued

Lakhimpur Kheri SDM Transfer

District Magistrate Mahendra Bahadur Singh issued an order on Friday to transfer Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajesh Kumar from Nighasan to Gola as SDM Judicial. Kumar’s role will now be filled by Ashwani Kumar Singh who was previously serving as the SDM Judicial in Gola.

The Incident

A video that appeared to show Rajesh Kumar threatening Barati Lal of Jhauvapurwa village in the Nighasan tehsil with jail time gained widespread attention on social media. In response to this incident, District Magistrate Singh said "An explanation was sought from SDM Rajesh Kumar following which transfer action was taken."

Inquiry Initiated

An inquiry into the matter is underway by Chief Development Officer Anil Singh and Additional District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Singh. The team conducting the probe is expected to submit its report within three days, after which further action may be considered based on their findings.

Kumar's Defense

Rajesh Kumar stated that the complainant had visited his office on September 20 with a request for his name to be added as a land-holder with transferable rights over patta land allotted by the government. However, he pointed out that no documentary evidence had been provided by the complainant to support this claim and noted that existing land records did not include his name either.

This incident underlines the importance of public officials maintaining a high standard of professional conduct, particularly in their interactions with citizens. It also serves as a reminder of the role social media can play in holding these officials accountable for their actions. The inquiry into this matter will be closely watched, not just by those directly involved but also by others interested in issues related to governance and accountability.

In conclusion, while it is essential that public servants perform their duties without fear or favour, they must always remember that they are ultimately accountable to the people they serve. This case could potentially serve as an example for other officials on how not to behave when dealing with complaints from the public. Furthermore, it underscores the need for clear guidelines and training for government officers on appropriate behaviour and communication strategies.
