Census 2027: Ladakh launches self-enumeration portal for India’s first fully digital Census

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has launched the Census 2027 self-enumeration portal in the Union Territory, formally starting the exercise locally. The Census will be Ladakh’s first since its creation in 2019 and India’s first fully digital Census. Officials said it will support secure data collection and improve policy and resource planning.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Sunday launched the self-enumeration portal for Census 2027 in the Union Territory. Saxena also filled the self-enumeration form during the event. Officials said the launch marked the start of the Census exercise in Ladakh. Census 2027 will be the first Census held in Ladakh after the 2019 reorganisation.

Officials said Census 2027 will be India’s first fully digital Census. The plan aims to improve efficiency, transparency and security in data collection. Officials also said the exercise will be the 16th Census since inception. It will be the eighth Census after Independence. The process will place strong emphasis on digital integration and data security.

Census 2027 self-enumeration portal in Ladakh

Appealing to residents, Saxena said the Census helps guide policy decisions and resource planning. Saxena said the exercise also supports national development work. Saxena urged people to take part so the national record captures Ladakh’s needs. Saxena said public participation would help reflect Ladakh’s identity and aspirations accurately.

Saxena said Census 2027 gives Ladakh a chance to build detailed and accurate regional data. Saxena said such data can support targeted development programmes. Saxena also said the findings can help shape better policy interventions. Officials said the portal will allow citizens to submit information directly during the self-enumeration window.

Census 2027 phases and dates in Ladakh

Officials said the Census process will take place in two phases. The first phase is House Listing Operations from June 1 to 30. Before that, a 15-day self-enumeration period will run from May 17-31. During that period, citizens can enter details using the dedicated Self-Enumeration Portal, officials said.

Officials said the second phase will cover Population Enumeration across the Union Territory. This work will be completed in September 2026. Officials said it will be carried out alongside other notified snow-bound areas. These areas include parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, they added.

The administration said the launch in Ladakh formally set the Census process in motion. Officials said the schedule starts with self-enumeration in May. It then moves to house listing in June. Population enumeration will follow later, ending in September 2026. Saxena asked residents to participate so Ladakh’s needs are recorded.
