Kottayam Church Heads Urgent Plea to Kerala Governor: Reject Church Bill
The head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Kottayam urged the Kerala Governor to reject any Church Bill that could undermine the Supreme Courts verdict on church control.
Kottayam, February 25: In a significant development, the head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, has appealed to the Kerala Governor, Arif Mohammed Khan, not to grant assent to any ordinance or legislation related to a potential Church Bill. The church has been embroiled in a long-standing dispute with the Jacobite faction over the control of certain churches in the state, which has intensified following a 2017 Supreme Court order.

Supreme Court Order and Ongoing Feud
The 2017 Supreme Court order granted possession of over 1,000 churches and their properties to the Orthodox faction. However, the order's full implementation has been hindered by protests from both factions. Amidst these challenges, rumours have emerged about the possible introduction of a Church Bill by the Kerala Government, prompting Mathews III to voice his concerns.
Mathews III's Appeal to the Governor
Addressing a Marthoma Paithrika Sangamam event, Mathews III highlighted the importance of upholding the Supreme Court order as the law of the land. He urged the Governor to exercise his discretionary power if any law or ordinance is introduced to bypass the apex court's verdict in favour of the Orthodox church.
Governor's Response and Constitutional Duty
In his response, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan acknowledged his constitutional obligation to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of India. His statement was met with applause from the audience. Khan emphasized that he is bound by his oath to uphold and obey the law, including the 2017 Supreme Court judgment.
Concerns and Fundamental Duties
The Orthodox church head expressed his belief that the Governor would use his discretion to ensure justice for the Malankara Orthodox Church. Khan acknowledged the church's concerns and stressed the importance of upholding the law for all Indian citizens, including himself. He reiterated his commitment to preserving, protecting, and defending the constitution and the laws of the country.
Ongoing Dispute and Implications
The dispute between the Orthodox and Jacobite factions has persisted for decades, often leading to law and order issues in various parishes across the state. While the Orthodox faction insists on the implementation of the 2017 Supreme Court order, the Jacobite faction alleges misinterpretation and unethical takeover of their churches. The ongoing feud continues to pose challenges for both factions and the state government.
The appeal by the Malankara Orthodox Church head to the Kerala Governor highlights the complexities of the church dispute and its implications for the state. As the situation unfolds, the Governor's decision regarding any potential Church Bill will be crucial in determining the future course of this long-standing conflict.
