Konark Dance Festival and International Sand Art Festival Commence in Odisha's Puri District
The Konark Dance Festival and International Sand Art Festival commenced in Odisha's Puri district. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the event, which marks the start of the tourist season in Odisha. Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who oversees the Tourism Department, joined Majhi in lighting the ceremonial lamp. This annual festival is organised by Odisha Tourism with support from the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation.

The opening night of the Konark Festival showcased India's classical dance heritage. It began with an Odissi dance performance by Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya from Bhubaneswar, followed by a Kathak recital by Malti Shyam and Group from New Delhi. The Odissi performance started with a devotional piece dedicated to Lord Jagannath, inspired by Adi Shankaracharya's Sri Jagannath Astakam. It then moved into Bhavranga and Shakti, depicting stories of divine power and Lord Shiva's energy in Shakti's feminine form.
International Sand Art Festival Highlights
Simultaneously, the 14th International Sand Art Festival turned Chandrabhaga Beach into a creative hub. This year, 129 renowned sand artists participated, including eight international artists from countries like the UK, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Russia, Portugal, Spain, and Sri Lanka. The festival featured thematic masterpieces along with contributions from artists representing Odisha and seven other Indian states: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
A total of 35 sand sculptures were crafted on themes such as women empowerment, Odia pride (asmita), and world heritage monuments. The festival not only celebrated artistic talent but also highlighted cultural themes significant to both local and global communities.
Dance Performances and Live Streaming
The Odissi dance was choreographed by Guru Lingaraj Pradhan and Guru Pankaj Kumar Pradhan with music composed by Bijay Kumar Jena and Bijay Kumar Barik. Malti Shyam's group performed the Kathak dance recital and Nartan Manjari, celebrating the divine-devotee bond through intricate rhythms and graceful movements. "The dance was choreographed by Malti Shyam," stated an official release.
The Konark Festival is being broadcast live on DD Bharati from December 1 to 5. Additionally, it is streamed across Odisha Tourism’s social media platforms for wider accessibility. This allows audiences worldwide to experience the rich cultural performances showcased at the festival.
This year's festivals not only promote tourism but also provide a platform for artists to display their talents. They celebrate India's diverse cultural heritage through dance and art while fostering international collaboration among artists.
