Sanjoy Roy has been apprehended by the Kolkata Police in connection with the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The victim, a second-year postgraduate student in the chest medicine department, was found deceased in the seminar hall of the hospital.

The post-mortem examination revealed that the doctor had been sexually assaulted and subsequently murdered. The initial autopsy report indicated severe injuries, including significant bleeding from her private parts, eyes, mouth, and other areas of her body, as reported by PTI.

There were also wounds on her face, neck, belly, left leg, right hand, and lips. The examination confirmed that her neck was broken, suggesting that she was strangled before being smothered to death. The crime is believed to have occurred between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM.

Circumstances Leading to Discovery

According to hospital staff, the victim had dined with her juniors around 2:00 AM on the night of the incident. She then went to the seminar room to rest, as there was no dedicated on-call room available for such purposes. Her body was discovered in the seminar hall the following morning, which led to the initiation of the investigation, as reported by Hindustan Times.

In the wake of this tragic incident, there has been significant political and public outcry. Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has called for the introduction of a new bill in Parliament to fast-track the trial and conviction of rapists and murderers, advocating for severe penalties such as encounters or the death penalty for offenders.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged that her government will pursue the death penalty for the accused and has expressed support for a central agency investigation into the case to ensure justice is served.
