Kolkata Rape-Murder Accused Sanjay Roy Pleads 'Not Guilty' In Polygraph Test

Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has asserted his innocence in his first interaction with his lawyer, Kavita Sarkar, at Presidency Jail.

During this meeting, Roy expressed his intention to plead "not guilty" when the case is presented in court. He also reiterated his innocence during a polygraph test, according to Sarkar.

In conversations with his legal team, Roy described the polygraph test, stating that he was asked approximately 10 questions, including a direct inquiry about his actions following the alleged murder.

At this point, Roy interrupted the questioning, vehemently denying any involvement in the murder. He claimed that such a question was irrelevant because he did not commit the crime.

According to his account, when he entered the room, he found the woman already lying unconscious.

Roy's lawyers have highlighted that he was asked various questions during the polygraph test, some of which pertained to his academic background, while others were related to the incident.

Throughout the process, Roy maintained that he was being falsely implicated, claiming that he did not even know the victim.

He stated that upon discovering her covered in blood, he panicked and fled the scene. When questioned by CBI officers as to why he did not report the incident to the nearby police outpost at RG Kar Hospital, Roy explained that he feared no one would believe him.

Currently held in a high-security ward at Presidency Jail, Roy has largely kept to himself. Jail officials noted that he appears to be brooding and exhibits a sense of fear in his interactions.

"There appears to be brooding, almost with a sense of fear, in the way he talks," remarked one officer, observing that Roy spoke at length with his lawyer under tight security.

The CBI, which has interviewed several witnesses in connection with the case, believes that Roy may be attempting to mislead the investigation and shift focus away from himself.

However, Roy's legal team argues that his version of events could be substantiated through CCTV footage, which could reveal whether there was a security lapse on the night of the incident.

Sarkar, who was appointed by the Legal Aid Defence Counsel System to represent Roy, stated, "If he had access to the seminar hall so easily, it shows that there was a security lapse on that night and someone else could also have taken advantage of that."

Sarkar also slammed the CBI's handling of the case, particularly their failure to provide Roy with essential legal documents.

"The CBI has not shared anything related to the case with us. Roy is entitled to a free copy of the FIR. The agency has not even supplied that. Instead, we have been asked to procure a certified copy from the court," she said, highlighting the challenges faced by the defense in preparing their case.
