Kolkata Stands Together: Candlelight Vigil Against RG Kar Hospital Murder

Kolkata witnessed a remarkable show of civic unity on Wednesday evening. Residents turned off their lights from 9 pm to 10 pm and took to the streets with candles to protest the murder of a doctor at RG Kar hospital. This act also expressed support for the victim's family.

Kolkatas Vigil for RG Kar Justice

Significant areas across West Bengal saw spontaneous protests. Citizens, armed with torches, candles, and backlit mobile phones, demanded justice for the RG Kar hospital victim. The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front organised the event, named "Let There Be Light, Let There Be Justice," to coincide with the Supreme Court's hearing on September 5.

Protests Across Kolkata

At 9 pm sharp, landmarks like Victoria Memorial and Raj Bhavan went dark. Homes across the city and its suburbs also participated in this blackout. Governor CV Ananda Bose lit a candle at Raj Bhavan, stating, "When light is fear, darkness is dear."

Large crowds gathered in various parts of Kolkata, Howrah, and Salt Lake. They carried candles and mobile phone torches while chanting "We want justice." They demanded accountability for the alleged rape-murder of the trainee doctor.

Key Locations of Protests

In Kolkata, protests occurred at notable spots such as Shyambazar five-point crossing, Moulali, New Town Biswa Bangla Gate, Rashbehari crossing, Behala, Garia, Ballygunge, Hazra crossing, and Jadavpur 8B bus stand. Both junior and senior doctors protested at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The victim's parents and extended family members were present at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Addressing the media from the hospital premises, they accused Kolkata Police of being overly active in cremating the victim's body. They also criticised the police's insensitive treatment towards family members after discovering the crime on August 9.

Demand for Swift Justice

The protesters urged that the case be resolved quickly by the apex court bench to prevent further delays in justice. The event aimed to highlight the urgency of addressing such heinous crimes promptly.

This widespread participation underscored the community's demand for justice and accountability. It also highlighted their solidarity with the victim's family during this difficult time.
