Kolkata Airport to Soon Operate Flights to 100 Destinations, Says Civil Aviation Minister
Plans are underway to revitalise the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, aiming to make it a major hub for international flights. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced that flights to 100 destinations will soon operate daily from the airport. Currently, the airport serves 15 international and 49 domestic destinations. The minister emphasised the goal of making it one of India's busiest airports.

Naidu highlighted that the number of aircraft using the airport daily has increased from 264 to 400, thanks to efforts by the Centre and support from the state. He also mentioned plans to boost annual passenger footfall from 2.6 crore to 4.5 crore. A new terminal is expected by November 2025 to accommodate this growth.
Infrastructure Developments and Economic Impact
The minister, accompanied by MoS Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, launched a commemorative coin and a coffee table book during the centenary celebrations. A new Udaan yatri cafe will be introduced on a trial basis, marking a first in India. TMC MP Sougata Roy urged for more international flights and better infrastructure at other state airports.
Naidu assured that improving airport infrastructure in Bengal is a priority, aiming to drive economic growth and create jobs. The Centre is enhancing Bagdogra airport's infrastructure due to its strategic location near Siliguri's Chicken Neck, crucial for economic and security reasons.
Historical Significance and Future Plans
During his first visit to Kolkata, Naidu noted the airport's historical significance, recalling India's first night landing there in 1924. He stated that Kolkata has always been central to India's civil aviation history. Among century-old airports, Kolkata stands out as iconic.
The government has increased the number of airports in India from 74 to 158 over the past decade, with plans for 50 more in five years. Mohol highlighted the airport's unique 17 MW solar plant, which harnesses non-conventional energy sources and reduces carbon footprints significantly.
The Chicken Neck area serves as a vital link between Siliguri and northeastern states, underscoring its importance for both economic and security purposes. Naidu reiterated the commitment to transforming Kolkata airport into one of India's largest and most advanced airports with world-class infrastructure.
