Kerala Signs MoU with Education Ministry to Join PM SHRI Schools Scheme for Infrastructure Development

Kerala has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Centre to join the PM SHRI Schools scheme, enabling infrastructure development in schools. This decision secures Rs 1,500 crore in pending funds for educational programmes in the state.

Kerala has officially joined the PM SHRI Schools scheme by signing a memorandum of understanding with the Centre. This decision, made by the Kerala government under the Left Democratic Front, came after overcoming objections from the coalition partner CPI. The scheme is designed to enhance infrastructure in two schools per block with support from the Central government.

The PM SHRI Schools initiative provides selected schools with an annual average assistance of Rs 1 crore for five years. This financial aid aims to improve educational facilities significantly. Kerala's Education Minister, Sivankutty, confirmed that the decision to participate in the scheme has been communicated to the Centre, and the department's secretary has been instructed to sign the agreement.

Central Assistance and Financial Implications

The decision to join was crucial for securing Rs 1,500 crore from the Centre, which is pending for various educational programmes in Kerala. Despite earlier agreements between CPIM and the Department of General Education to join the project, strong objections from CPI led to twice reversing this decision. The latest move was made without consulting the state Cabinet.

Initially, Kerala opposed joining due to concerns about implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state. There were also worries about displaying boards identifying schools as PM SHRI Schools. However, these concerns were eventually set aside to secure necessary funding for educational development.

Overcoming Political Hurdles

The decision reflects a strategic move by Kerala's government to ensure financial support for its schools despite political challenges. The state's initial resistance stemmed from fears that joining could lead to NEP implementation in Kerala. However, prioritising educational funding ultimately took precedence over these concerns.
