Kerala Police Charge Mayor, MLA with Non-Bailable Offences on Driver's Complaint
In a recent development from Kerala, the police have initiated legal action against the city's Mayor, Arya Rajendran, her MLA husband Sachin Dev, and three others. This move comes after a KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) bus driver lodged a complaint alleging that his bus was obstructed by the accused, preventing him from performing his duties. The case, filed by the cantonment police on directions from a city court, includes non-bailable charges against the mayor and her companions.

The complaint stems from an incident where the mayor, her husband, and their associates allegedly used their private vehicle to block the KSRTC bus. The FIR lists several charges against them, including assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty (Section 353), criminal trespass (Section 447), wrongful restraint (Section 341), uttering obscene words (Section 294 B), and tampering with evidence (Section 201) under the Indian Penal Code.
According to the FIR details, the accused not only obstructed the bus but also verbally abused the driver and passengers. Furthermore, they are accused of destroying the memory card of a CCTV camera installed inside the bus. This legal action follows the driver's plea to the court for an investigation into his allegations against Rajendran and her group, claiming that prior police complaints had gone unregistered.
Interestingly, this case unfolds against the backdrop of another legal complaint filed against the KSRTC driver. He was accused of making sexually suggestive gestures towards the mayor and her relative while they were in their private vehicle. This earlier incident gained significant attention after visuals of the mayor and her family confronting the bus driver post-blocking his vehicle at a signal near Palayam went viral on social media. The driver has since refuted these allegations, suggesting that the confrontation was merely over not giving way to Rajendran's vehicle.
This series of events has sparked considerable public interest and debate over civic responsibilities and the conduct of public officials and citizens alike. With legal proceedings now underway, further developments are awaited as both sides of this contentious issue seek to present their cases.
