Kerala Elections 2026: LDF, UDF, NDA Promise ₹3,000 Pension, Women Welfare in Focus

Thiruvananthapuram: With the Kerala assembly elections drawing closer, the state's three major political alliances - the Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF), and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) - have unveiled their manifestos, placing a strong focus on welfare expansion, women-centric schemes, healthcare access, and infrastructure development.

A key point of convergence across all three alliances is the promise to increase welfare pensions to ₹3,000, signalling a competitive push to attract women voters and economically weaker sections.

Welfare Pension Push

The LDF and UDF have both pledged to raise welfare pensions to ₹3,000 per month across categories. The NDA, meanwhile, has targeted its promise specifically at women heads of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, widows, and senior citizens above 70 years, also committing ₹3,000 per month.

Women-Centric Promises

Women's welfare has emerged as a central theme in all manifestos. The LDF has promised to generate 20 lakh jobs for women over the next five years, aiming to boost female workforce participation.

The UDF has focused on mobility and financial support, pledging free travel for women in KSRTC buses and a monthly allowance of ₹1,000 for college-going girls.

The NDA has proposed a ₹2,500 monthly benefit under the 'Bhakshya Arogya Suraksha' scheme for women from BPL families, targeting both nutrition and financial assistance.

Healthcare Commitments

Healthcare expansion is another major battleground. The LDF has promised to upgrade all Primary Health Centres (PHCs) into Family Health Centres and establish a Digital Health Grid to streamline services.

The UDF has proposed the 'Oommen Chandy Health Insurance' scheme, offering coverage up to ₹25 lakh, significantly expanding financial protection for families.

The NDA has pledged to expand the Ayushman Bharat scheme to cover all citizens in the state and has also proposed the establishment of an AIIMS to strengthen tertiary healthcare infrastructure.

Infrastructure Development Plans

On infrastructure, all three alliances have outlined ambitious projects. The LDF has proposed high-speed rail connectivity along with metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.

The UDF has announced 'Mission Samudra', a waterways development initiative, alongside metro expansion in the same cities.

The NDA has promised a Thiruvananthapuram-Kannur high-speed rail corridor and completion of the Kochi Metro network.

Agriculture and Traditional Sectors

In agriculture, the LDF has pledged to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for rubber and modernise farming practices.

The UDF has focused on traditional industries, promising wage support for sectors such as coir and cashew.

The NDA has proposed MSP coverage for all supported crops and the introduction of multi-crop options in plantation sectors.

Youth and Education Focus

Education and youth empowerment also feature prominently. The LDF aims to position Kerala as a "Knowledge Hub" with a focus on improving higher education quality.

The UDF has promised interest-free business loans of up to ₹5 lakh for young entrepreneurs.

The NDA has proposed introducing optional English-medium education in government schools.

As campaigning intensifies, the overlapping promises - particularly on welfare pensions - highlight the high-stakes battle for voter support in Kerala, with each alliance attempting to outdo the other through targeted welfare and development agendas.
