Kerala Chief Minister Requests Doordarshan to Halt Screening of 'The Kerala Story'
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has openly criticized Doordarshan's decision to air "The Kerala Story," urging the public broadcaster to retract its decision to showcase the film, which he believes could heighten communal tensions in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections. Vijayan's concerns highlight the potential for the film to serve as a tool for political propaganda, particularly for the BJP and RSS, emphasizing the need for Doordarshan to maintain its impartiality and not contribute to societal polarization.

Doordarshan has scheduled the broadcast of "The Kerala Story" for April 5, a move that has sparked controversy and opposition from various quarters, including the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPIM. The CPIM has echoed Vijayan's sentiments, accusing the BJP of attempting to use the film to polarize Kerala's secular society and advance its political agenda, especially as it struggles to gain a foothold in the state.
The controversy surrounding "The Kerala Story" is not new. The film faced significant backlash upon its release, with the censor board removing 10 scenes deemed problematic. Despite this, the Kerala High Court refused to stay the film's release last year, noting that its trailer did not contain content offensive to any community as a whole and that it had been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for public exhibition.
The movie's trailer had come under fire for its claim that 32,000 women from Kerala were converted, radicalized, and deployed in terror missions across India and globally. This narrative was challenged in court due to its potential to incite communal discord. Additionally, both the CPIM and Congress organized protests against the movie's release in 2023, reflecting widespread opposition within Kerala.
The BJP has countered these criticisms by alleging an unofficial ban on the movie in Kerala's theatres, suggesting a concerted effort to suppress its distribution within the state. This claim adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing debate over "The Kerala Story" and its implications for communal harmony and political discourse in Kerala.
In summary, "The Kerala Story" has become a focal point of contention between political parties in Kerala, with concerns about its potential to disrupt communal harmony ahead of crucial elections. The decision by Doordarshan to broadcast the film has only intensified these debates, underscoring the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the responsibility of broadcasters to avoid inflaming societal tensions.
