Kaziranga Elephants Celebrate Pori's First Birthday with Health Checks and Treats

The elephants of Assam Forest Department in Kaziranga National Park had a delightful celebration as Pori, the youngest elephant, turned one on Saturday. The forest officials organised a special event, including a health check-up for all elephants. Veterinarians examined them for abscesses, fungal infections, and foot nail overgrowth, ensuring their well-being.

An atmosphere of joy filled the Kohora range with balloons and cakes for human guests. The elephants enjoyed a feast of seasonal fruits like bananas, sugarcane, oranges, grapes, and apples. Kaziranga is home to 65 departmental elephants and 39 private ones. Pori, the birthday girl, was shy and stayed close to her attentive mother Bhadoi. Meanwhile, her playful two-year-old friend Gadapan was curious about the fruit treats.

Celebration Highlights Elephant-Human Bonding

Visitors, especially children, relished the birthday festivities. Assam Environment and Forest Minister Chandramohan Patowary extended his wishes to Pori on her special day. "We wish Pori, our youngest member of the Kaziranga family, a very happy first birthday," Patowary posted on X. The event highlighted Assam's rich tradition of human-elephant bonding and how these majestic animals are cherished as family members.

The celebration not only marked Pori's birthday but also underscored the importance of caring for elephants in Kaziranga. Such events help promote awareness about wildlife conservation and the harmonious relationship between humans and elephants in Assam.
