Kashmir Terror Attack Foiled: Terrorist Neutralised, NCO Injured In Kupwara Encounter

In Kupwara, Kashmir, a terrorist was killed and an NCO injured in a gunfight following heightened terror activities. The clash was part of joint counterterror operations, emphasizing the tense security situation in the region.

A terrorist was killed and a non-commissioned officer (NCO) injured during a gunfight in the Kupwara district of Kashmir on Wednesday.

This incident followed an increase in terror activities, particularly south of the Pir Panjal mountains, which separate Jammu from the Kashmir Valley.

The Army reported on X that the clash began after a joint search operation with Jammu and Kashmir Police based on specific intelligence about terrorists' presence. "On 24 July [Wednesday], suspicious movement was observed and challenged by vigilant troops, in response to which terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. In the ensuing firefight, one terrorist was eliminated and an NCO was injured. Operation is in progress," stated the Army's Chinar Corps.

Increased Terror Activities

The Trimukha Top forest, where the gunbattle occurred, is close to the Army's Divar camp, which monitors movements in the Lolab Valley. This forest connects Lolab with Bandipora and Baramulla districts and is often used by terrorists to move between districts after infiltrating from across the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir.

This confrontation happened a day after Lance Naik Subhash Chander from Uttar Pradesh was killed in Poonch district during an exchange of fire as the Army thwarted an infiltration attempt along the LoC. The region has seen heightened alertness due to increased terror attacks.

Recent Incidents

On Monday, terrorists attacked village defence guard Parshotam Kumar's residence and an army picket at Gundna Khawas in Rajouri. Kumar's uncle, Vijay Kumar, and a soldier were injured in this predawn attack. This incident occurred two days after Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi reviewed security measures with police, paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies in Jammu amid ongoing attacks.

This year alone, 28 people have died in nearly a dozen attacks across six districts of Jammu. These include 12 security personnel, a village defence guard, and five terrorists. Four Army personnel died last Tuesday during a gunfight with terrorists in Doda district. A week earlier, five soldiers were killed and five wounded in a terrorist ambush in Kathua.

Security Measures

The Army has responded by deploying more troops to the region, reorienting its units, and enhancing its intelligence network for counterterror operations. Security forces have adjusted their strategies as districts like Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi became primary targets for Pakistan-based terror groups.

Last year saw seven soldiers killed in counterterror operations within the Kashmir Valley compared to 20 in the Rajouri-Poonch sector. In total, 71 terrorists were killed across Jammu and Kashmir in 2023; 51 were eliminated in the Kashmir Valley while 20 were neutralised in the Rajouri-Poonch area.

Ongoing Operations

The recent attack on Kathua followed twin gunbattles earlier this month in Kulgam district where six terrorists and two soldiers lost their lives. On June 9th, armed terrorists attacked a pilgrim bus in Reasi resulting in nine deaths and injuries to 42 others.

Additionally, three terrorists were killed on June 26th following a gunfight with security forces in Gandoh area of Doda district. The region remains under high alert as security forces continue their efforts to thwart further infiltration attempts.
