Karnataka Woman Stripped, Parades Naked: NHRC Issues Notice to State Govt, Police Chief
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report about a 42-year-old woman who was allegedly stripped, paraded naked, tied to an electric pole, and assaulted in Belagavi district, Karnataka. The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the human rights of the victim woman.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a 42-year-old woman was stripped, paraded naked, tied to an electric pole, and assaulted in Belagavi district of Karnataka after her son eloped with a girl from the same village.
NHRC Issues Notice to Karnataka Government
The NHRC has issued a notice to the Karnataka government and the state's police chief seeking a detailed report on the incident within four weeks. The report should include the status of the First Information Report (FIR) registration, progress in the investigation, arrests made, if any, compensation paid under the Victim Compensation Scheme, and steps taken or to be taken to prevent such incidents in the state.
On-Spot Fact-Finding Inquiry Ordered
Considering the gravity of the matter, the NHRC has also asked its Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Investigation to constitute a team to conduct an on-spot fact-finding inquiry at the earliest and submit a report within two weeks.
Violation of Human Rights
The NHRC observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the human rights of the victim woman. It emphasized that it is the duty of the state to safeguard vulnerable sections of society, especially women, children, and elderly persons.
The NHRC's prompt action in taking cognizance of the incident and issuing notices to the concerned authorities demonstrates its commitment to protecting the rights of citizens and ensuring justice for victims of human rights violations.
