Karnataka BJP To Name New Opposition Leader On November 17: Who Are the Top Contenders?

Following the appointment of BY Vijayendra as the Karnataka party president, the BJP high command is set to announce the names of Opposition leaders in both houses of the Assembly on November 17. With Vijayendra, a Lingayat, as the state president, there is speculation that the party may select a Vokkaliga or an Other Backward Classes (OBC) leader for the Opposition leader position.

After six months since the Assembly elections were declared, the BJP declared Vijayendra as the Karnataka party president on Friday, paving the way for the appointment of Opposition leaders in both houses.

Vijayendra mentioned that a party Legislative Party meeting is planned for November 17, where high command-appointed observers will gather legislators' opinions. The high command is expected to announce the Opposition leader's name on the same day.

Considering caste calculations, if the high command opts for a Vokkaliga community leader, frontrunners include former ministers Dr. Ashwath Narayan, R Ashoka, and Araga Jnanendra. If the choice is for an OBC leader, Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar might be a top contender.

To strengthen its Lingayat base, considering its alliance with the Vokkaliga-backed JDS, Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal could also be considered. In the case of a surprise candidate, Rajajinagar MLA Suresh Kumar, a Brahmin, is also reportedly in contention.

Regarding the Opposition leader in the Legislative Council, Tejaswini Gowda, an MLC representing Vokkaliga and woman category, might be chosen. If an OBC leader is preferred, Kota Srinivas Poojary could be selected once again.
