Kanyari Village in Sonawari Assembly Boycotts Elections Due to Disconnection from System

A village in the Sonawari assembly segment of Bandipora district saw a near-total boycott of the polls on Tuesday. Out of over 500 eligible voters, only one person cast their vote, according to officials. This area was among 16 constituencies in the border districts of Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara participating in the final phase of voting in Jammu and Kashmir.

Kanyari Village Boycotts Sonawari Elections

Residents of Kanyari village expressed feelings of disconnection from the political system. District Election Officer Manzoor Ahmad Qadri noted that villagers did not feel included in the process. "That's why they stayed away from polling," he explained. Despite efforts to encourage participation, these attempts were unsuccessful.

Qadri mentioned that he tried to convince the villagers about the significance of engaging in the democratic process. "We explained to them the importance of democratic process but, unfortunately, they refused to give in," he stated. The lack of participation was stark, with only one out of 514 voters casting a ballot on Tuesday.

Unmet Demands and Discontent

Officials reported that Kanyari villagers had requested land from the government for building homes in safer locations after their houses were destroyed by floods in 2014. Despite a decade passing since the disaster, their demand remains unmet, contributing to their dissatisfaction with the system.

The villagers' decision to boycott reflects their frustration over unfulfilled promises. The lack of action on their request for safer housing has left them feeling neglected by authorities. This sentiment has led to their disengagement from participating in elections.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges faced by communities affected by natural disasters and their interactions with governmental processes. The villagers' experience underscores the need for addressing grievances to foster trust and engagement in democratic exercises.

The election boycott by Kanyari residents serves as a reminder of the importance of fulfilling commitments made to communities. Addressing such issues is crucial for ensuring active participation in democratic processes and rebuilding trust between citizens and authorities.
