Sisamau warehouse fire in Kanpur sends thick smoke; nine tenders deployed, no casualties

A large fire swept through a plastic furniture and plywood warehouse near Sangeet Talkies in Kanpur’s Sisamau area, sending dense black smoke across the skyline and prompting evacuations. Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma said nine fire tenders were deployed from multiple stations. Narrow lanes and combustible stock complicated the operation. No casualties were reported.

A major fire swept through a plastic furniture and plywood warehouse near Sangeet Talkies in Sisamau on Tuesday. Thick black smoke rose above the skyline and alarmed residents in the crowded area. Officials said no casualties were reported. The fire affected a godown in Bhannana Purwa, Chamanganj, and forced quick action from emergency teams.

The blaze began around noon and spread fast through stored goods. Large stocks of plastic chairs, other furniture and plywood caught fire within minutes. A dark smoke column was visible from nearly two kilometres away. Several shopkeepers moved items from nearby stores, worried the flames could reach them.

Nine fire tenders reached the spot from Latouche Road, Colonelganj, Fazalganj, Mirpur Cantonment and Kidwai Nagar fire stations. Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma confirmed the deployment. Firefighters worked with police and local residents. Teams first cleared people from nearby buildings, before starting a wider operation to control the flames.

Deepak Sharma said access problems slowed the response in the first phase. Narrow lanes made it hard for vehicles to move and position hoses. The stored material added risk, as plastic and plywood burn quickly. The heat level remained high, and the smoke spread across the neighbourhood during the effort.

"The situation was extremely challenging because of the narrow lanes, intense heat and highly combustible material stored inside the warehouse, the CFO said.The flames were visible from a long distance and thick smoke had engulfed the area. Our priority was to evacuate people safely and stop the fire from spreading, Sharma said.\"

Sisamau fire control effort continues with cooling operations

Officials said the blaze was brought under control after nearly three hours of continuous firefighting. Crews then began cooling work to prevent fresh flare-ups. That phase continued for several hours. Residents reported heavy smoke in parts of the locality, and some areas saw reduced visibility because of the density.

According to officials, the building where the fire started belongs to Faisal, a resident of Faithfulganj. The first floor was used to store plywood. One of the upper floors was recently rented to a plastic furniture trader. Locals claimed the furniture godown lacked an electricity connection, raising suspicion of heat or a stray spark.

The incident led to panic across the busy Sisamau area as smoke drifted over homes and shops. Emergency teams focused on evacuation first, then containment, and later cooling operations. Officials maintained that no one was hurt. Investigators continued to review the building conditions and the possible trigger behind the fire.
