Karnataka Government Requires Kannada on Product Labels and Usage Instructions
The Karnataka government has mandated that all industrial and consumer products made in the state must display names and usage instructions in Kannada, alongside other languages. This directive applies to both government and private sectors, as per a circular issued on February 15.

Authorities have been tasked with ensuring compliance with this rule. The enforcement authorities, designated under Section 9 of the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, are responsible for monitoring adherence by manufacturers in both sectors. The circular emphasises the importance of language in reflecting culture, tradition, and values.
Language and Cultural Significance
The circular highlights that for a language to flourish, it must be integrated into production, marketing, and business activities. This integration is crucial for preserving the local language and providing better opportunities for Kannadigas across various fields. The government aims to promote the comprehensive development of the Kannada language through this initiative.
The Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, will be effective from March 12, 2024. This act underscores the importance of using Kannada in product names and instructions. Section 177 of the Act specifies that product names and usage instructions should be in Kannada wherever possible, along with any other applicable languages.
Implementation and Compliance
The government has stressed that strict implementation of these guidelines is essential. By ensuring that product information is available in Kannada, the state aims to enhance accessibility for local consumers. This move is part of a broader effort to integrate the local language into everyday life and business practices.
The directive reflects a commitment to preserving linguistic heritage while fostering economic growth within Karnataka. By mandating the use of Kannada on product labels, the government seeks to strengthen cultural identity and support local businesses.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote regional languages across India. By prioritising Kannada in product labelling, Karnataka sets an example for other states aiming to preserve their linguistic heritage while supporting local economies.
