Kangana Ranaut Addresses Defamation Case, Apologises For Misidentifying Farmer In Controversial Tweet

Kangana Ranaut appeared in Bathinda court, expressing regret for misidentifying Mahinder Kaur in a tweet during the farmers' protest. Her apology followed legal developments amidst ongoing discussions with Kisan unions.

Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut found herself once again at the centre of headlines — this time, not for her outspoken views or film projects, but for a long-pending controversy from 2020. Appearing before a Bathinda court, Ranaut expressed regret over a tweet that had misidentified elderly farmer Mahinder Kaur during the farmers’ protest.

The actor, who is known for her fiery political statements and unapologetic public persona, appeared notably restrained as she addressed the issue that has shadowed her for nearly five years.

Outside the court, Kangana spoke to reporters amid a crowd of supporters. Smiling but firm, she said,

Ranaut clarified that she hadn’t created the controversial post herself but had merely retweeted a meme that went viral during the farmers’ protest of December 2020. The tweet had wrongly portrayed Mahinder Kaur as Shaheen Bagh activist Bilkis Bano, alleging she was “available for Rs 100” to attend protests — a statement that triggered outrage and led to a defamation case.

According to advocate Raghubir Singh Beniwal, who represents Mahinder Kaur, the actor appeared before the court following summons to secure bail. During the proceedings, she expressed her wish to apologise personally to the complainant, acknowledging that the situation had caused distress. As Kaur was unwell, her husband attended the hearing on her behalf.

The Supreme Court, earlier this year, had declined to quash the defamation proceedings, observing that Kangana had “added spice” to an already sensitive issue.

While Kangana’s statement in court was seen as a conciliatory move, not everyone was satisfied. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Manjeet Rai said,

Kangana Ranaut, who has never shied away from controversy, has often blended her roles as an actor, activist, and politician. From fiery social media posts to public debates, she remains one of India’s most polarising celebrity figures. Her Bathinda appearance, however, marked a rare moment of public remorse — a softer tone from someone known for her defiance.

The next hearing date for this case is set for November 24, as mentioned by Mahinder Kaur's lawyer. The outcome remains uncertain as discussions with Kisan unions are still pending regarding any potential resolution or further actions related to this matter.
