BJD, BJP Clash Over Kamiya Janis Jagannath Temple Entry
The BJD and BJP engaged in a heated social media debate over Kamiya Janis entry into the Jagannath Temple in Puri. The BJP accused a BJD leader of aiding her entry, while the BJD claimed she had previously worked with top BJP leaders on Hindu heritage films.
In a recent turn of events, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha found themselves embroiled in a heated social media exchange over the entry of social media influencer Kamiya Jani into the revered Jagannath Temple in Puri. The controversy stemmed from Jani's alleged promotion of beef consumption on her YouTube channel, raising concerns among BJP members about her presence in the temple, where non-Hindus are prohibited from entering.

BJP Raises Concerns, BJD Retaliates
The BJP initiated the debate by questioning how an individual associated with promoting beef consumption was granted access to the 12th-century shrine. This prompted a strong response from BJD MP Manas Mangaraj, who took to social media to counter the allegations. Mangaraj highlighted Jani's previous engagements with prominent BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, where she had collaborated on films promoting Hindu heritage and temples. He shared screenshots of photos featuring Jani that were shared by these leaders on their social media handles, questioning their sudden objection to her visit to the Jagannath Temple.
BJD Questions BJP's Motives
Mangaraj further accused the BJP of intolerance towards the significant progress made in the development of the Sri Mandir, suggesting that their criticism of Jani was merely a means to undermine the BJD's efforts. He pointed out that Jani had previously visited other prominent Hindu pilgrimage sites, such as Char Dham and the Ayodhya Ram Temple, without facing any objections from the BJP.
BJP Responds, SJTA Denies Allegations
In response to Mangaraj's post, BJP MLA Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra, a close aide of Pradhan, defended the party's stance, asserting that attempts to conceal the truth would only serve to expose it further. He questioned the appropriateness of promoting Mahaprasad, a sacred offering, by someone associated with promoting beef consumption.
Meanwhile, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) released a statement denying allegations that Jani had taken video cameras inside the temple premises. They emphasized that such claims were baseless and invited anyone with evidence to present it for investigation and appropriate action.
Jani Defends Her Visit
Amidst the controversy, Kamiya Jani took to Instagram to defend her visit to the Jagannath Temple. She asserted her mission as an Indian to promote Indian culture and heritage globally, highlighting her previous visits to various Jyotirlingas and Char Dhams. She clarified that she neither consumes nor has ever consumed beef, expressing surprise at the controversy surrounding her temple visit.
The social media spat between the BJD and BJP over Kamiya Jani's temple visit underscores the complexities of religious and cultural sensitivities in contemporary India. As political parties engage in debates over the preservation of traditions and the promotion of inclusivity, it remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold and impact the ongoing discourse on religious practices and social media influence.
