Justice Sanjiv Khanna to Be Sworn In as 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India, announced Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. He will assume his new responsibilities on November 11, 2024, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice, D Y Chandrachud, who will step down a day before, upon reaching 65 years of age.

The announcement was made through a post by Meghwal on the social media platform X, highlighting the constitutional procedure followed for this appointment, which involves consultation between the President and the incumbent Chief Justice of India.

Justice Khanna's term as the Chief Justice of India will be notably brief, spanning just over six months. He is set to retire on May 13, 2025. This short tenure follows his predecessor's, Justice D Y Chandrachud, who began his term on November 8, 2022.

The transition between Chief Justices marks a significant moment in the judiciary, reflecting the structured and constitutional process that dictates these appointments and tenures in the country's highest judicial office.
