Priyanka Gandhi Urges Judicial Investigations for All Doubtful Police Encounters in Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh police have reported the shooting of a second suspect involved in the Sultanpur jewellery store heist. This incident occurred early Monday morning in Unnao district. The Special Task Force (STF) from Lucknow engaged in a gunfight with Anuj Pratap Singh around 4 am in Achalganj, according to officials. The robbery, which took place on August 28, involved the theft of jewellery valued at approximately Rs 1.5 crore from Bharat Jewellers in Sultanpur city.

Political Reactions and Controversy
The recent encounter has sparked political controversy. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has called for judicial investigations into encounters that are under suspicion. She expressed her concerns on X, criticising the use of violence and political dominance as a means of law enforcement. She stated, "The law of murder, violence, bloodshed and politics of taking away life, the law of bulldozer, has nothing to do with the Constitution and justice."
Priyanka Gandhi further commented on the principles of law and order. She emphasised that it should focus on societal peace, criminal reform, and providing citizens with a chance to live. She remarked that taking lives without court orders amounts to murder. Her statements reflect a broader concern about the methods employed by law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh.
Previous Incidents and Political Criticism
Earlier, another suspect, Mangesh Yadav, was killed by the STF on September 5 in an encounter related to the same case. This incident also drew criticism from political parties like the Samajwadi Party and Congress, who labelled it as a fake encounter. The ongoing debate highlights concerns over the legitimacy and necessity of such actions by the police.
Priyanka Gandhi questioned the effectiveness of these encounters in improving law and order in Uttar Pradesh. She cited data indicating that approximately 13,000 encounters have occurred in the state over seven years but questioned their impact on crime rates. "Crimes are not stopping," she noted, questioning the purpose behind these actions.
Gandhi's remarks underscore a demand for accountability and transparency in handling criminal cases. She urged for an end to unconstitutional practices and insisted on judicial scrutiny for encounters shrouded in doubt. Her call for investigation aims to ensure justice aligns with constitutional values.
The situation continues to unfold as political leaders and citizens alike scrutinise law enforcement practices in Uttar Pradesh. The debate raises important questions about balancing security measures with constitutional rights and justice principles.
