JNU Celebrates Top Position in 2024 QS Rankings, Elevating Indian Education on Global Stage
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has been lauded for its significant achievement in the latest global academic rankings. Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit expressed her pride in the university's epistemic community for elevating Bharat on the global stage as a knowledge powerhouse, securing the top position in the 2024 QS rankings. This accomplishment underscores JNU's commitment to fostering excellence alongside equality, entrepreneurship with equity, and innovation with integrity.

The London-based higher education analytics firm, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), announced that JNU is the highest-ranked university in India. Notably, it achieved the 20th position globally for development studies. This recognition is a testament to the university's dedication to academic excellence and its role in shaping future leaders and innovators.
QS CEO Jessica Turner highlighted the educational challenges India faces, particularly in providing high-quality tertiary education amidst surging demand. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to address these challenges by targeting a 50% gross enrolment ratio by 2035. Turner's remarks reflect optimism about India's progress in higher education, evidenced by an increase in Indian programmes featured across QS's subject rankings and faculty areas—from 355 to 454.
Furthermore, Turner acknowledged the advancements made by India's three privately-run Institutes of Eminence. These institutions exemplify how effective private sector involvement can contribute positively to enhancing India's higher education landscape. Despite ongoing challenges such as improving standards, expanding access, and increasing digital readiness and global competitiveness, these developments signify India's forward momentum in education.
In the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject, India showcased a robust research capability, evidenced by a 20% improvement in the Citations per Paper indicator. Additionally, there was a 16% growth in the International Research Network indicator, highlighting an increase in research partnerships' volume and diversity.
Regionally, within Asia, India now ranks second only to mainland China in terms of the number of universities featured in the rankings, with 69 institutions making the list. It also holds a commendable fourth position for the total number of ranked entries (454), following China, Japan, and South Korea. Moreover, India ranks fifth regionally for the number of top 200 entries and sixth for top 100 entries.
This achievement not only marks a significant milestone for JNU but also for India's higher education sector at large. It reflects the country's growing influence and reputation in the global academic community, highlighting its commitment to nurturing talent and promoting research excellence.
