JNU Elections 2023-24: A New Approach to Authorizing Representatives for the General Body Meeting

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is implementing a new process for its upcoming union elections, requiring student organizations to provide names of authorized individuals for conducting the General Body Meeting (GBM). This differs from previous practices where students consensually decided on GBM representatives.

On Monday, February 5, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi took a significant step in preparation for its upcoming union elections by requesting student organizations to submit the names of individuals who will be authorized to conduct the General Body Meeting (GBM). This meeting plays a vital role in the election process, as it leads to the selection of the election commissioner.

Shift from Previous Practices

In contrast to the 2019 polls, the Dean of Students (DoS) Office has issued a notice requesting representatives of student organizations to unanimously decide on the names for the GBM. Previously, students would consensually agree among themselves on who would hold the GBM, and the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) would organize the meeting at the university level to elect the election commissioner.

DoS Steps In

Since the administration did not notify the JNUSU in 2019, the DoS, in its absence, has taken the initiative to ask student organizations to provide names for conducting the GBM. A notification reveals that the DoS held a meeting with representatives of approximately 16 student organizations on Monday to initiate the process for the students union elections for the academic year 2023-24.

Unanimous Decision

During the meeting, it was mutually agreed upon that students would unanimously select the members of the GBM. However, the meeting faced opposition from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the JNU's student wing, which boycotted the proceedings. The ABVP expressed its objection to the DoS's involvement in conducting the JNUSU elections, emphasizing that the process should be entirely student-centric and managed by an election commission comprising students.

Significance of GBM

The GBM holds immense importance in the election process, as it is the platform where students select the members of the commission responsible for declaring the JNUSU results. After a four-year hiatus, JNU is set to hold its students union elections, marking a significant event in the university's democratic practices.
