JN.1 Covid Variant: Should You Be Worried?

The emergence and swift spread of the JN.1 variant, a new iteration of Covid-19, has stirred concern both in India and globally. However, the question arises: should we be alarmed? Is this variant the most contagious among all Covid strains we've encountered thus far?

JN.1 Covid Variant: Should You Worry?

According to Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Former DG of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), caution is necessary, yet there isn't evidence to suggest that JN.1 is more severe or prone to causing increased pneumonia or fatalities. She advocates for adhering to the routine preventive measures already familiar to us in dealing with the virus, highlighting the similarity between JN.1 and the well-known Omicron, with only a few additional mutations. Consequently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has labeled it a variant of interest rather than a variant of concern.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points out that the growing prevalence of JN.1 in infections indicates its potential for increased contagiousness or better evasion of our immune defenses compared to previous virus versions.

While the WHO has acknowledged the rapid spread of JN.1, they have refrained from categorizing it as a variant of concern. Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the National Indian Medical Association Covid Task Force, noted that 30% of individuals with flu-like symptoms who underwent testing in the Kochi region of Kerala were found to be Covid positive within a 24-hour period. He emphasized the community transmission of Covid cases and suggested that if tested extensively, the variant would likely be detected nationwide, not just in Kerala.

The JN.1 sub-variant of Omicron was initially identified in Kerala last month. NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr. VK Paul informed PTI that 21 cases have been reported to date, with 19 in Goa and one each in Kerala and Maharashtra.
