JK and Ladakh Launch Four New NCC Units to Empower Boys and Girls

Lieutenant General M V Suchindra Kumar, Northern Army Commander, inaugurated four new National Cadet Corps (NCC) units in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. This includes the first Air Squadron at Udhampur. These initiatives aim to empower youth and instil national pride. The Army Commander's remarks highlighted the Indian Armed Forces' role in mentoring NCC cadets, enhancing their training with battlefield experience and technical expertise.

New NCC Units Established in JK and Ladakh

The Ministry of Defence's decision to increase NCC vacancies led to the creation of four new units in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. This development opens up new opportunities for the youth in these regions. Lt Gen Kumar presided over the raising ceremony at Udhampur, marking a significant step for youth empowerment and national integration, according to a defence spokesperson.

Empowering Youth through NCC Expansion

The newly established units include the 6 JK Battalion NCC at Udhampur, 1 Air Squadron NCC at Udhampur, 7 JK Battalion NCC at Kupwara, and 2 Ladakh Battalion NCC at Kargil. These units extend the reach of the NCC in strategically important areas. Scrolls symbolising honour and responsibility were presented to these units during the ceremony.

Addressing officers, dignitaries, and cadets, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) emphasised that this expansion is a strategic move. He highlighted the unique role of the NCC in national integration. The training and discipline provided by the NCC can significantly shape young people's outlook, offering them a platform for national service.

NCC's Role in National Integration

The GOC-in-C stressed that this initiative aims to empower both boys and girls by providing opportunities to develop leadership skills, discipline, and national pride. "The youth of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh have immense potential," he said. Their contribution to the nation can be transformational.

A notable addition is the formation of an Air Squadron NCC, allowing cadets to explore aviation fields beyond conventional roles. The GOC-in-C praised the Indian Armed Forces' efforts in mentoring cadets, acknowledging their battlefield experience enhances training programmes.

Achievements and Future Prospects

The GOC-in-C also recognised Associate NCC Officers (ANOs) as role models guiding cadets in personal and academic development. Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh, Director General of NCC, was present at this occasion. Established in 1948, the NCC has evolved continuously, empowering youth through leadership and discipline.

With 17 lakh cadets nationwide across 825 units, 6,500 schools, and 4,500 colleges, the NCC is expanding its reach. "We are increasing overall cadet strength to 20 lakhs," he said. New raisings are being pioneered by Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh Directorate alongside a nationwide expansion of existing battalions.

Notable Cadet Achievements

Maj Gen Rajesh Kumar Sachdeva shared achievements of NCC cadets in various service entries: 28 became officers; 178 joined as sub-inspectors; 799 as Agniveers; 221 as constables. He lauded three cadets selected for NCC's Mount Everest Expedition in 2025.

The ADG noted a historic milestone: 1 Ladakh Battalion NCC received a unit citation from Ladakh's Lt Governor. The expansion marks a new chapter in fostering unity among youth. "This initiative represents our vision for a stronger India," stated GOC-in-C.

The GOC-in-C expressed gratitude to civil administration for supporting policy formation and resource allocation ensuring smooth functioning of NCC activities across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
