Jharkhand Polls 2024: What Tipped The Scales In Favor Of Hemant Soren?

Hemant Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led coalition is on track to retain control of Jharkhand. According to Election Commission data from Saturday afternoon, the alliance was leading in at least 56 out of the 81 seats in the state assembly.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had anticipated a strong performance following an intense campaign. However, they were leading in only 23 seats, which was below their expectations. The BJP's strategy focused on removing "infiltrators" from the Santhal Parganas region. This approach did not resonate well compared to JMM's emphasis on tribal issues and sympathy for Hemant Soren's arrest.

Sympathy and Tribal Support

The BJP accused Hemant Soren of corruption, but he countered by portraying his arrest as unjust due to his tribal identity. The JMM capitalised on this narrative, suggesting that the central government was anti-tribal. This strategy was effective in garnering sympathy votes during the assembly elections.

Kalpana Soren emerged as a significant factor for the JMM-led alliance. Despite being new to politics, her efforts at the grassroots level resonated with women voters. Her engagement with local issues helped strengthen the party's connection with female constituents.

Women Voters' Influence

The JMM had faith in its Maiya Samman Yojna initiative, which proved beneficial. There was a four per cent increase in women voter turnout this time, and their support played a crucial role in determining the success of JMM candidates.

In response to BJP's accusations of appeasement, Hemant Soren effectively defended his party. The BJP leadership alleged that Soren was sheltering illegal Bangladeshi migrants. However, Soren challenged these claims by questioning why border security forces were failing if such crossings were occurring.

Infiltration Allegations

The JMM maintained its influence over Santhal Pargana, an area that BJP claimed was heavily impacted by demographic changes due to immigration. JMM supporters argued that election results indicated that tribal communities were not swayed by concerns over Bangladeshi immigration.

The internal disagreements within the BJP regarding candidate nominations also seemed to have negatively impacted their performance. Discontent over selecting candidates who switched parties may have contributed to their electoral setbacks.

The election results highlight how effectively JMM leveraged tribal identity and addressed local concerns to secure voter support. Their strategies contrasted sharply with BJP's focus on national issues like infiltration, which did not resonate as strongly with Jharkhand's electorate.
