Jharkhand Police Probe Palestinian Flag Display at Muharram Event
The Jharkhand police have initiated an inquiry after videos surfaced showing youths waving Palestinian flags during a Muharram procession in Dumka district. These videos, which went viral on social media on Wednesday, depict the youths atop a vehicle, waving flags and chanting slogans at Dudhani Chowk.

Sub Divisional Police Officer of Dumka, Vijay Kumar Mahto, stated, "These videos are being circulated on social media platforms. We are investigating these videos. We will take action if they are genuine." The investigation aims to verify the authenticity of the footage and determine appropriate actions.
Political Reactions and Demands for Action
BJP state president Babulal Marandi shared one of the videos on X, demanding strict measures against individuals with what he termed a "Talibani mentality." Marandi criticised the Hemant Soren government, alleging that such incidents stem from its policy of Muslim appeasement.
Marandi further commented, "Waving the Palestinian flag during the Muharram procession in Dumka is an act of treason and also a despicable attempt to spread fear among the general public of the area. Bangladeshi infiltrators have been settled under the protection of the state government. The aim is to put an end to the tribal indigenous identity of Santhal Parganas and secure the vote bank."
Calls for Investigation by Higher Authorities
BJP MP from Godda, Nishikant Dubey, also called for an investigation and stringent action against those involved. Dubey posted on X, "The intruders have become so emboldened that the Palestinian flag was waved in the Muharram procession in Dumka, which is the karmabhoomi of Hemant Soren Ji." He urged the Ministry of Home Affairs and NIA to probe the incident.
Dubey's post included a demand for severe punishment: "The traitorous Taliban supporters should be hanged." This strong stance reflects growing political pressure for decisive action against those responsible for waving foreign flags during local religious events.
Local Organisations' Response
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has warned that it will call for a bandh in Dumka if the administration does not act against those who waved Palestinian flags. This warning underscores the heightened tensions and demands for accountability from local authorities.
As investigations continue, the police aim to establish whether these actions were deliberate attempts to incite fear or disrupt communal harmony. The outcome of this inquiry will likely influence future measures to prevent similar incidents.
The situation remains tense as both political leaders and local organisations await concrete steps from law enforcement agencies. Ensuring communal harmony while addressing concerns raised by various stakeholders will be crucial in resolving this issue effectively.
