Jharkhand High Court Directs State to Tackle Illegal Immigration from Bangladesh
The Jharkhand High Court has instructed the state government to take swift measures against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants entering through the Santhal Parganas. This directive came from a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Arun Kumar Rai during a hearing of a PIL filed by Daniel Danish.

The court noted that the current unstable situation in Bangladesh could lead to an increase in illegal immigration. Consequently, the bench ordered the director of the intelligence bureau, the director general of the BSF, the chief election commissioner of India, and the director general of the Unique Identification Authority of India to be included as parties in this case. Notices were issued to these officials, requiring them to respond to the matter.
Inspection of Identity Documents
The court suggested that sudden inspections of Aadhaar cards and voter identity cards should be conducted. These checks would help identify illegal settlers and deter others from attempting to enter India unlawfully. The judges emphasised that both state and Union governments need to collaborate to address this issue effectively.
The petition highlighted that immigrants from Bangladesh have been entering through six districts in Santhal Pargana: Deoghar, Dumka, Pakur, Godda, Sahebgunj, and Jamtara. It claimed that this influx is disturbing the demographic structure of the tribal population in these areas and poses a serious threat to national sovereignty.
Collaborative Efforts Required
The court stressed that tackling illegal immigration requires joint efforts from both state and Union governments. The judges remarked that given the current scenario in Bangladesh, the situation is likely to become more volatile. The case is scheduled for another hearing on August 22.
In their observations, the judges mentioned that identifying illegal settlers through sudden inspections would not only help in detection but also act as a deterrent for future illegal entries. They reiterated that coordinated action between various government agencies is crucial for managing this problem.
The petitioner's claims about the demographic impact on Santhal Pargana's tribal populace due to Bangladeshi immigrants were taken seriously by the court. The bench acknowledged that this issue poses a significant threat to India's sovereignty and needs immediate attention.
The court's directive aims at curbing illegal immigration by involving multiple high-level officials and ensuring thorough inspections of identity documents. This approach is expected to provide a comprehensive solution to the problem while maintaining national security.
The next steps involve responses from the notified officials and further hearings to assess progress on this matter. The court's proactive stance highlights the urgency of addressing illegal immigration through coordinated governmental efforts.
