Jharkhand Election 2024 Schedule Out! Can Congress-JMM Alliance Help Retain Power Or Will BJP Dominate?
As Jharkhand gears up for its 2024 Assembly elections, the political landscape is becoming more complex with the Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) reaffirming their alliance. While both parties exude confidence in retaining power, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to challenge them, riding on the state's trend of delivering alternating governments in recent elections.
The JMM-Congress Alliance: A Bid for Stability

The Congress and JMM have announced their intent to contest the upcoming elections together, with the seat-sharing formula expected to be finalised soon. Both parties believe that the alliance can retain power, based on their performance in governance and development work.
Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Keshav Mahto expressed optimism, highlighting the work done by the current government. Hemant Soren, the JMM leader and current Chief Minister has also emphasised that the alliance would contest all 81 seats, seeking to capitalise on their coalition's perceived achievements in social welfare and infrastructure development.
However, the JMM's concerns about the BJP's early knowledge of election dates, raised by their spokesperson Manoj Pandey, indicate a defensive posture. The JMM alleged that Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma knew the dates in advance, suggesting it might be a "threat to democracy." This statement points to the coalition's fear of losing the narrative before the election battle has even begun.
BJP's Offensive: Aiming for a Comeback
On the other side of the spectrum, the BJP is eager to regain power in a state where it has previously governed. The party responded to JMM's allegations by accusing them of fearing defeat. The BJP's confidence stems from its increasing influence in states across India, coupled with its ability to build alliances that can break traditional voting patterns.
While the BJP is yet to finalise its list of candidates, reports suggest that their seat-sharing arrangement with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners is nearly complete. This readiness indicates that the BJP is positioning itself to mount a strong challenge against the ruling alliance.
Jharkhand has a history of alternating governments, with neither party managing to hold power for consecutive terms in recent elections. The BJP will likely capitalise on this pattern, offering itself as the stable alternative to the JMM-led alliance, which has faced criticisms over corruption scandals and governance issues under Soren's leadership.
Key Factors at Play
- Voter Fatigue: The pattern of alternating governments suggests that voters may be looking for change after five years of the JMM alliance rule.
- BJP's Campaign Strategy: The BJP's ability to push a narrative of strong central leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi could sway voters seeking better law and order, investment and industrial growth.
- JMM Alliance Development Claims: The ruling alliance has been trying hard to defend its record, pointing to welfare schemes, tribal rights, and rural development initiatives.
In the coming weeks, as both sides turn the campaigning gear to full throttle, Jharkhand's electorate will have to weigh the promises of stability and development from the ruling coalition against the BJP's push for a change in leadership. With the state's history of political volatility, this election promises to be a closely fought contest.
