Jharkhand CM Calls for Report on Agriculture Affected by Low Rainfall
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has expressed concern over the rain deficit in Jharkhand. On Friday, he instructed officials to compile a report on its impact on agriculture. This report will be presented to the Centre to seek assistance. During a high-level meeting, he reviewed the effects of below-normal monsoon rainfall and urged timely preparations to support farmers.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need for a comprehensive strategy if the low rainfall persists. He directed officials to expedite irrigation projects and prepare for alternative agricultural methods. Additionally, he instructed them to stay vigilant and monitor rainfall and crop sowing across all districts.
Impact on Agriculture
Soren highlighted that the weak monsoon is directly affecting paddy and other crop sowing. This situation is impacting a significant number of farmers, according to an official statement. He asked for a detailed report on the agricultural impact due to insufficient rains. This report will be discussed in the NITI Aayog meeting to seek Centre's assistance for farmer relief.
The Chief Minister noted that scanty rainfall has been a recurring issue, with drought-like conditions affecting farmers for two consecutive years. In 2023, 158 blocks across 17 districts were declared drought-hit by the state government. The previous year saw 226 blocks facing similar conditions.
Preparation and Monitoring
Officials were instructed to start preparations promptly to provide relief to farmers if the rain deficit continues. Soren stressed the importance of speeding up irrigation projects and preparing for alternative agriculture methods. He also directed continuous monitoring of rainfall and crop sowing activities in all districts.
Soren's directives aim to mitigate the adverse effects of weak monsoons on agriculture. By preparing a detailed report and seeking assistance from the Centre, the state hopes to provide necessary support to affected farmers.
The Chief Minister's proactive approach underscores the urgency of addressing rain deficits and their impact on agriculture. Ensuring timely preparations and monitoring can help alleviate some of the challenges faced by farmers due to inadequate rainfall.
