BJP MLAs Forcibly Evicted Following Protest in Jharkhand Assembly

In a dramatic turn of events at the Jharkhand Assembly on Wednesday, marshals forcibly removed BJP and AJSU Party MLAs from the House to the lobby. The legislators had refused to leave the Well, protesting Chief Minister Hemant Soren's refusal to answer their questions on key issues, including employment. They claimed that despite their peaceful sit-in protest, lights and air-conditioning were turned off around 10 pm.

BJP MLAs Evicted in Assembly Protest

Chief Minister Soren met with the 23 protesting MLAs, which included 21 from BJP and two from AJSU Party, in an attempt to pacify them. However, they remained firm in their demands. "We placed our demands before the CM and sought his assurance for a reply. But the CM said he would reply on the issues on Friday. We want his reply on Thursday, as those are related to people and the government’s promises," BJP chief whip Biranchi Narayan told reporters.

Protests Continue Overnight

Despite being evicted from the Well, BJP legislators continued their protest in the assembly lobby throughout the night. They were seen lying in the lobby adjacent to the main entrance, raising slogans against Chief Minister Hemant Soren's government. Medical check-ups were conducted for the legislators overnight, and food was provided for them.

Jharkhand BJP in-charge Laximkant Bajpai accused the government of holding opposition legislators hostage inside the assembly. "It is murder of democracy as opposition legislators were held hostage inside the assembly," he alleged. Bajpai also claimed that lights and air-conditioners were switched off and drinking water supply was cut off during their sit-in protest.

BJP's Demands and Government's Response

Earlier in the day, BJP MLAs created noisy scenes in the assembly demanding that Chief Minister Soren reply to their questions. During Question Hour, BJP chief whip Biranchi Narayan asked about Soren's promise of five lakh jobs for youths. Soren assured them he would answer all questions with proper statistics but did not provide immediate responses.

The House proceedings continued amid slogan shouting until it was adjourned for lunch at 12:30 pm. When it reconvened at 2:10 pm, Leader of the Opposition Amar Bauri urged the Speaker to direct Soren to respond to issues such as job promises and regularization of contractual workers. Bauri insisted that until Soren spoke on these issues, they would not leave the House.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur criticised the BJP's actions in the Assembly. "The ruckus that was created by the BJP in the Assembly today will not send a positive signal," he said. Thakur added that everyone was ready to listen to their concerns but stressed maintaining the dignity of the House.

Minister and JMM legislator Mithilesh Thakur termed the BJP legislators' agitation as 'childish obstinacy' and claimed they were setting a wrong precedent. "The CM himself went to the House, sat on the floor and heard their grievances. Opposition leaders cannot decide how the assembly will be run," he said.

Assembly Adjournment and Future Plans

Perturbed by BJP legislators' conduct, Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto adjourned the House till 11 am on Thursday. Mahto expressed his disappointment, stating that it seemed BJP MLAs did not want to let the House function or listen to the government's reply.

BJP youth wing also staged a dharna outside the assembly, raising slogans against Soren's government. Meanwhile, Minister Dipika Pandey Singh remarked that such actions were expected from BJP during an election year.

The ongoing protests highlight significant tensions between opposition parties and Chief Minister Hemant Soren's government over unfulfilled promises and governance issues. The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for further confrontations in upcoming sessions.
