Jharkhand Assembly Election 2024 Phase 1 Voting: Prime Minister Modi Urges Voter Participation

Jharkhand Assembly Election 2024 Phase 1 Voting: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon voters in Jharkhand to participate enthusiastically in the ongoing assembly elections. The voting process for 43 assembly seats began on November 13, with a total of 683 candidates, including former CM Champai Soren and ex-MP Geeta Koda, vying for positions. Modi expressed his encouragement via X, urging first-time voters to prioritise casting their votes.

Polling stations opened at 7:00 am across 15 districts and will remain operational until 5:00 pm. However, voting at 950 booths will conclude an hour earlier at 4:00 pm. Those already in line by that time will still be allowed to vote, according to an official statement. A total of 1.37 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes in this election phase.

Political Campaigns and Strategies

The JMM-led coalition is aiming to maintain its hold on power by promoting welfare schemes like the Maiyan Samman Yojna. In contrast, the BJP is campaigning vigorously with a focus on Hindutva, infiltration issues, and allegations of corruption against the current government. Prominent BJP figures such as PM Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and JP Nadda have been vocal in their criticism during rallies.

Meanwhile, leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Congress' Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and legislator Kalpana Soren, have highlighted welfare initiatives while accusing the BJP-led Centre of misusing central agencies like ED, CBI, and I-T against opposition leaders.

Phase 1 Polling Details

A total of 683 candidates are contesting in this phase—609 men, 73 women, and one third-gender candidate. Of the 43 assembly seats up for grabs, 17 are open to all candidates, while 20 are reserved for scheduled tribes and six for scheduled castes. The Chief Electoral Officer K Ravi Kumar confirmed that all necessary arrangements for voting have been finalised.

Kumar also noted that mock polls commenced at 5:30 am. Women will oversee operations at 1,152 polling stations while differently-abled individuals will manage another 24 booths. Since the Model Code of Conduct was enacted, authorities have seized illegal materials and cash worth Rs 208.78 crore.

Election Dynamics

The NDA and INDIA bloc are both striving hard for victory in these elections. The BJP is focusing on themes like 'Roti, Beti, Maati,’ whereas the INDIA bloc is emphasising 'suppression of the voice of a tribal CM’. On Sunday before the elections began, PM Modi held a massive roadshow in Ranchi that drew large crowds.

In Lohardaga constituency, Congress veteran Rameshwar Oraon faces off against AJSU's Shanti Bhagat. Meanwhile in Jamshedpur (West), JD(U) candidate Saryu Roy competes against Congress' Banna Gupta. The second phase of elections is scheduled for November 20 with vote counting set for November 23.

Previous Election Outcomes

The last assembly elections in 2019 saw a tight race between major parties. The JMM secured victory with 30 seats while the BJP managed only 25 seats—a drop from their previous tally of 37 seats in 2014. The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance achieved a comfortable majority by winning a total of 47 seats.

The current assembly consists of members from various parties: JMM holds 26 seats; Congress has secured 17; and RJD has one seat under its belt within the ruling coalition led by JMM.
