Jawan who exposed rot in 'sahayak system' found dead

An army Jawan from Kerala who had criticised the army orderly system better known as 'sahayak system' was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Thursday. Roy Mathew's body was found in an abandoned barrack in Deolali Cantonment in Maharashtra in a decomposed state. In his last conversation with his wife, Mathew,33, is said to have told that he had inadvertently spoken ill of the orderly system in the army to an online journalist who had secretly recorded the conversation. The family now suspects foul play.

Mathew's statements were secretly recorded by a news website criticising the orderly system in February and the video had gone viral. Even as the website took precautions to blur his face and conceal the identity, Mathew had told his wife that he was in trouble for his statements. Mathew had served in the army for almost 13 years and was among many other jawans who were seen in the video. The sting operation focused on highlighting the plight of trained soldiers forced to indulge in menial household work at officers' homes because of the 'sahayak' system.

Mathew was facing an inquiry after the sting operation went viral and had been missing from his unit since February 25 after allegedly coming under pressure by batchmates and seniors.
