Jamshedpur Power Cut: City Plunged Into Darkness, Viral Video Of Fire Misleads Public
A brief power outage plunged several parts of Jamshedpur into darkness. Starting around 7 PM, the outage disrupted critical infrastructure, including hospitals and various residential areas throughout the city. The power was restored around midnight at 3 am.

Following the blackout, social media was flooded with rumors and images, falsely claiming that the power failure was due to a blast at one of Tata Steel's blast furnaces. These claims quickly spread, heightening concerns across the residents in the city.
However, Tata Steel officials have clarified that there is no fire at Jamshedpur Works, stating that the situation is fully under control. They have urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors that may cause unnecessary alarm.
As for the videos circulating online, it must be noted that regulations in many countries prohibit the release of certain gases into the atmosphere. Instead, these gases must be safely disposed of, often through controlled methods like flaring (burning) them to prevent environmental harm.
The blackout had a significant impact on Jamshedpur's infrastructure, particularly its hospitals. Even Tata Main Hospital (TMH), a critical healthcare facility, experienced power disruptions.
Meanwhile, efforts to restore power were immediately initiated by Tata Steel UISL. While alternative power sources quickly restored electricity to critical infrastructure such as Tata Steel facilities, Tata Main Hospital (TMH), and other hospitals, the underlying cause of the outage remained unclear as investigations were ongoing.
Residents were left in the dark, literally and figuratively, as rumors of a massive explosion spread rapidly across social media platforms.
Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure stated earlier that a power outage affecting parts of Jamshedpur was caused by an issue in the DVC grid. "The Tata Steel UISL Ltd team has taken prompt action to resolve the situation," the statement read.
Tata Steel also addressed the concerns, stating: "As part of our emergency management protocols, we initiated a safe blowdown of the blast furnace, released gases, and took immediate steps to refire the furnace."
The company further clarified: "There is no fire at Jamshedpur Works. All actions were taken in line with our standard safety procedures to ensure the safety of equipment and the community."
In addition, Tata Main Hospital (TMH) confirmed that it experienced a brief power outage during the blackout, but thanks to the backup power system, hospital operations were not disrupted. "TMH is functioning normally, and all services are fully operational," the company assured in its communique.
The situation is now under control, with normalcy gradually returning to the city as power is being fully restored.
