Unfounded Claims About DSP Adil Mushtaq's Role in Kokernag Attack Dismissed by J&K Police
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have dismissed allegations made by a news outlet suggesting that arrested deputy superintendent of police, Adil Mushtaq was involved in the recent terror incident in Kokernag area of Anantnag district. They warned against spreading such misinformation which is liable for legal action.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday dismissed allegations made by a news outlet claiming that Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Adil Mushtaq was involved in the recent terror incident in Kokernag, Anantnag district. The police have condemned this as irresponsible journalism and warned that such actions are liable for legal action.
Unfounded Allegations Against DSP

A video news item circulated by Bharat TAK suggested that DSP Adil Mushtaq played an insider role in the Kokernag terror incident. However, the Jammu and Kashmir Police categorically denied these claims. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar stated on social media site X, "There is no truth to this video news."
Mushtaq was arrested last month on corruption charges unrelated to any terrorist activities. He is currently under investigation for a case based in Srinagar district rather than Anantnag where the terror incident occurred. ADGP Kumar clarified these details while emphasizing on the irresponsibility displayed through such journalism.
Irresponsible Journalism Condemned
Kumar expressed his disapproval towards such unfounded accusations stating, "This type of irresponsible journalism is also an act of criminal misconduct and is liable for legal action." This statement underscores the severity with which law enforcement agencies view false accusations aimed at disrupting ongoing investigations or maligning individuals without substantiated proof.
The Kokernag Terror Incident
Last month witnessed a tragic gunfight in Kokernag area of Anantnag district resulting in loss of four security personnel lives including two army officers and one police officer. In addition to this heartbreaking loss, Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Uzair Khan was among the two terrorists killed during the encounter.
In light of these events, it becomes crucial to maintain the integrity of news reporting. Unsubstantiated allegations and irresponsible journalism not only impact the individuals concerned but also have a broader societal impact by creating unnecessary panic and confusion.
In conclusion, while freedom of press is an integral part of democracy, it must be exercised with responsibility and adherence to truth. Misinformation or disinformation can lead to unwarranted consequences including legal action as highlighted by ADGP Kumar's statement. The incident serves as a reminder about the importance of responsible journalism in today's world where information spreads at lightning speed making fact-checking more important than ever before.
